History of the Club
In 1896, a group of eight men and 13 women gathered to form the College Graduate Club with the goal of bringing together people with academic degrees to discuss important topics of the day. In 1909, some male members joined a group that belonged to college fraternities to form an inter-fraternity organization. The University Club was then formally organized.
Today, The University Club Atop Symphony Towers is the business and social center of San Diego’s professional elite. Located on the 34th floor of the Symphony Towers, The University Club is in the heart of the San Diego downtown business and cultural community. Symphony Towers, crowned by the Club, houses Copley Symphony Hall at ground level, with a cross-section of the most prestigious business firms of San Diego in between.
Over a Century of Living with Intention
In 1896, a group of 8 men and 13 women created the College Graduate Club with the intention of connecting scholars to discuss the important topics of the day. A decade later, The University Club was founded as a private corporation aimed at promoting literature, art and culture amongst its Members, laying the foundation for the dynamic interactions we have always aspired to cultivate at the Club.

Since The University Club became a member of the Invited family in 1989, we have been a hub for San Diego’s professional, civic and community leaders to connect. As we look to the future, we aim to serve as a conduit for these same influential people to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in San Diego.
Giving Back to Our Community
At The University Club, giving back to our community is central to our mission. Through local outreach programs and collaborations with key organizations, our members have the unique opportunity to drive meaningful change.
